Brandon TIN – February 2016
Submitted by Board member, Mike Nantais
On February 25, the night before the BYTE conference, about 20 people came to
Brandon University’s Faculty of Education for free supper and three short talks about
technology and education. Following the traditional TIN format, ManACE board member
and BU prof, Mike Nantais welcomed everyone and then the hungry attendees enjoyed
pizza, salad, cinnamon sticks, and networking before presentations began.
Long time ManACE board member, Andy McKiel introduced the speakers, starting with
2015 Seed grant winner, Jewel Sundell, from Sioux Valley High School in Brandon.
Jewel highlighted various ways that she and her students have used the
technology purchased with the grant to become more social with their learning
by showing what they know. An inspiring story, and we learned that this project
enabled her to expand the learning by ordering more technology for the school
this year! Next up, was Melissa Lander, another 2015 Seed grant winner. Melissa
told us about Meadow School’s exciting introduction to robotics using Lego
Mindstorm kits. Finally, Zoe Bettess, ManACE board member from Westwood
School in Thompson, told us about her new Maker Club and how it has engaged
students in her school. After the presentations, Andy led the group in a brief, but
interesting, discussion about the maker movement. The evening closed with
draws for iTunes gift cards, everyone went home with a full belly and an engaged
mind! A few photos of the event can be found on our Instagram feed

Winnipeg, stay tuned for details!
